Amanera: Playa Grande, Dominican Republic

Style: Beach, Seclusion, Adventure

About: Amanera is a peaceful tropical escape set on the secluded Playa Grande beach on Dominican Republic’s northern coast. Everything about this place is impeccably beautiful and spacious. This is where you go to find peace and to escape the hustle and bustle of tourism. This area of Dominican Republic is ideal for those that like the path less traveled, who like active adventure, and cultural immersion. This property is best suited for adults, but children are happily welcomed.

Rooms: The property features 24 contemporary casitas that feature floor to ceiling windows so you can see every inch of beauty this destination has to offer. Each casita has a living room fit for entertaining guests, a spacious closet/dressing room, an expansive bathroom with every amenity you could think of, with never ending natural light, and a wrap around lanai. Some of the casitas feature plunge pools so you can take a quick dip when you wake up. It is truly clear that Amanera thought of every detail when they designed this property.

Pool/Gym: Amanera has an infinity pool up at Casa Grande, which gives the illusion that it spills right into the ocean. However, with their own private beach, you may never need the pool. The gym is a state of the art facility with an enchanting view of the ocean. With a certified personal trainer on site, you have so many heart pumping options, such as bachata and mergenue dancing lessons, yoga, Zumba, nature hikes in the mountains, stand up paddle boarding, kite surfing and many other calorie burning activities.

Restaurants: The restaurant in Casa Grande boasts the best views on the property, overlooking the expansive Playa Grande beach where you can catch the most beautiful sunsets. The food is fresh and features local ingredients. This is the perfect place for anyone with a gluten or dairy allergy. Definitely try the paleo coconut pancake on the breakfast menu. It’s to die for! During the day, I suggest grabbing lunch at the Beach Club, where you will nosh on fresh caught ceviches and the fish of the day, while you wash it down with a fresh Piña Colada served in a pineapple. Perfection!

Vibe: Zen

Spa: The Spa at Amanera is an 8 minute golf cart ride away from the main property. Tucked away in lush vegetation and so peaceful, you will find two large treatment rooms featuring indigenous wellness treatments. You also have the privilege of receiving your treatment in your own casita.

Kids: Amanera invites children to stay at their property with customized activities for every age. From scavenger hunts, to hikes into the tropical jungle led by naturalists, Amanera ensures children have opportunities to discover their surroundings while staying active and engaged.

Wheelchair accessibility: This hotel is not wheelchair accessible.

Why you should go: Amanera was at full occupancy when we visited, yet it felt like we had the place to ourselves. Aman is Sanskrit for peace, and they have truly achieved that at this property. Although Amanera is peaceful and off the beaten path, they are in the middle of natural beauty with active adventures, cultural immersion, and impeccable service at every touch point. You will have the opportunity to go to a local cigar roller exclusive to Amanera guests, visit Laguna Gri Gri on one of their colorful boats, go deep sea fishing, or try your hand at surfing. This place should be on everyone’s bucket list!

Tips: Travel here from January to March to catch the humpback whales that roam their warm waters in nearby Samana.
