Style: Beach, Adventure, Local Immersion
About: Gansevoort Playa Imbert is a contemporary beach front residential style piece of heaven on Dominican Republic’s north coast. Although the property feels private, they are actually tucked into the streets of Sosua. You will be next to the action when you are ready to wander out. Playa Imbert is Gansevoort’s second property in the Caribbean and I hope they continue to expand. Rooms surround the infinity pool with unobstructed views of the ocean. My 3-bedroom apartment had 24 hour personal butler service, who anticipated my needs before I even knew I had them. This is your spot if you like a luxuriously trendy and hip atmosphere.
Rooms: Gansevoort features 48 suites ranging from 1 to 4 bedroom lofts, apartments, and penthouses. The style is contemporary residential living. The rooms offer so much space, you may find yourself dancing with arms wide open like Julie Andrews in the Sound of Music.
Pool/Gym: The expansive infinity pools are your first view as you walk into the entry of the hotel. Oversized cabanas line the pool with inviting views of the ocean and the rugged mountain line of Puerto Plata in the distance.
They have a state of the art workout facility overlooking the property high above. You may find yourself working out even if you didn’t plan to, just because the views are gorgeous. If you are more inclined to do yoga or want a more personalized experience, they do have on site personal trainers.
Restaurants: You have 3 choices, in addition to room service. The most unique and my favorite is La Cantina Wine and Cigar Cellar (shown above in image mosaic). Think warm and cozy, where you and your guests can socialize in an intimate setting, while enjoying world class Dominican cigars and the finest collection of international wines. Gansevoort is where you go to see and be seen, but the Cellar is where you go for privacy and intimacy.
Baia and Aguazul are open air, beachfront restaurants.
Baia offers a Mediterranean menu finding most of its influence from Italy. You will find fresh caught fish, pastas, and an array of ceviches on the menu. I highly recommend the Tuna Tartare with plantains and yuca chips.
Aguazul offers Nikkei cuisine, which is a fusion of Japanese and Peruvian foods. Think sushi with Peruvian flavors and techniques.
Vibe: Hip and sophisticated
Spa: The Gansevoort Spa by L’Occitane was just reimagined in December. The new spa will feature multiple treatment rooms focusing on rejuvenation and relaxation. What makes this spa unique is the delicious juice bar, offering a variety of healthy, detoxifying sips for guests. The steam room and dry sauna are perfect pre-treatment experiences to relax your muscles and your mind. I enjoyed the reflexology treatment and I can’t recommend it enough.
Kids: The large residential style apartments are perfect for families as they offer private bedrooms each with their own bathroom. No bathtubs though, so not ideal for families with babies. There are lots of activities for everyone to enjoy. Nearby Puerto Plata and the surrounding area have many fun options, including the Monkey Jungle, zip lining, parasailing, snorkeling, horseback riding, and so much more. If you’re like me, you don’t have kids but you do have a fur baby that you’d love to bring with you. Good news! Gansevoort invites your dog with special amenities during their stay.
Wheelchair accessibility: This hotel is not wheelchair accessible.
Why you should go: Puerto Plata is a unique oceanside city that boasts culturally immersive experiences for travelers. It’s less touristy than Punta Cana and offers rugged natural beauty for adventure seekers. Gansevoort is close to the city center to explore, but secluded so it feels off the beaten path. Gansevoort is hip and young, but mature enough to keep away spring breaker craziness. Lastly, BUTLER service! Enough said.
Tips: Splurge for the ocean front room on the third or fourth floor as they offer uninterrupted views of the ocean. Some travelers tell me they don’t care about their room view as they’ll be out exploring the whole time. Trust me, these rooms are so amazing, you will want to spend time in them. The value is worth the cost!
True North Amenities:
- Daily breakfast
- Upgrade at arrival, based on availability
- Late check out, based on availability
- Bottle of wine for your welcome amenity
Getting there: Fly into Puerto Plata (POP) and it’s a 15 minute drive to the hotel. They do have parking available for guest vehicles, but I would recommend taking a private transfer with the VIP fast track service through customs. Well worth it so you can bypass the cattle drove of people at customs in 5 minutes or less.
